CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Mike and the others sat in a diner on the outskirts of Houston. Most of the center of the city had been closed off after being declared a disaster zone, and hundreds had been evacuated to hastily set up centers further out.

The place they were in had remained open throughout the night for customers, but now it was the early hours and apart from the task force members, a waitress and one kitchen staff member were its only inhabitants.

“I’ve been involved with some crazy shit, but this one takes the—” Diaz looked down at his slice of sponge and sugar frosting. “— Cake.”

The waitress approached the corner table, the only one large enough for them to all sit around. In her hand was a coffee pot. “Refill?”

Most nodded.

Mike looked at Reed sat to his right. “Why haven’t they just sent the marines after whatever Travis is?”

“Too public,” said Alexis answering first. She looked at the doctor. “Right?”

“There are other teams trying to find him, but before Travis was… changed—” She looked at Mike. “— He reached out to you.”

“Yeah but if this thing isn’t Travis anymore, what’s the connection to Mike now?” said Dawn.

“Whatever Travis is, there’s still a memory of his time as a human left. It’s why we think he returned home, and we can use that.”

Mike looked down into his coffee. “That wasn’t the only time he reached out…”

Reed looked at him, her eyes wide. “What? When was the other time?”

“A cafe in Tulsa. The—”

“Yes!” said Alexis. “The security camera showed on your phone. It was Travis telling us, he was watching…” Her enthusiasm trailed off as she realized the ramifications. She looked at Mike. “Has he been always watching us?”

Reed answered for him. “Possibly. We have to presume that most forms of modern communication are compromised. Which is why I asked all of you to leave your phones in the truck.”

Mike took a sip of his fresh coffee. “That also means he wanted us to see what he did to the old man.” Pieces were starting to fall into place in Mike’s mind, even if he didn’t want them too. “He could have erased the footage. This thing that is inside Travis, wanted us to see what it could do.”

Silence fell upon those at the table.

“But what’s its purpose? What did it achieve by what it did in Payton? Killing all those people?” said Dawn.

“It… he’s absorbing their minds,” said Mike.

“They were judged,” said Alexis. “That’s what this thing think’s its job is, to judge us.”

“And getting your face sucked off means you are going to robot heaven or hell?” said Diaz still enjoying his desert.

“The white room…” said Mike. Those around the table looked at him.

“What?” said Reed.

“Something happened when I was in the Wilsons’ home. Something I can’t explain.” He gave them a quick rundown of the experience, leaving out the fact that he had seen what appeared on the television screen in his dream, and watched each for their reaction. He was fairly sure most thought he was losing his mind, then smiled at the pun.
